Short Residential Respite Breaks

For Carers

The respite needs of carers is a vital part of supporting families to stay together and carers to care for longer in the community.

Since 2000 Care for Carers have been developing and  running ‘ Stepping Out ’ short residential breaks for carers.

We aim to provide a rolling programme of breaks from March to October, but depending on funding this may be more.

We cater for up to 22 carers on each break.

The breaks are structured, organised and managed to give each carer the type of break where they can relax and enjoy the freedom of being away from their caring responsibilities.

Why a short residential break ?

Sometimes we all just need to get away and find ourselves again. This is what  the ‘ Stepping Out ‘ model was devised to do by providing a service which :

· Takes carers away from their caring situation.

· Provide a comfortable residential break over the course of a weekend.

· Provide all the catering and activities, freeing the carer from any household responsibilities for the duration of the break.

· Incorporate social, emotional, educational and therapeutic support and opportunities for the carer.

· Deliver a structured and organised short break supported by residential staff.

Please contact us for elidgebility and costs for this service.

There are some free spaces for this service but carers can also use ‘self directed support payments‘ or budgets to cover costs for the breaks.

How does the service work ?

Well, ‘ Stepping Out ‘ short residential breaks take place from a Friday afternoon to the Sunday afternoon.

All breaks take place at the purpose built Low Port Education Centre in Linlithgow and are free.

A full programme of organised activities is available during the course of the short break, but you can do your own thing or simply enjoy the rest.

The structure of the break has been simplified down to five component parts namely, social activities, physical activity, emotional support, therapeutic activities and educational activities.
